Suffering is not enough

17 Apr

Life is filled with suffering, but it is also filled with many wonders, like the blue sky, the sunshine, the eyes of a baby. To suffer is not enough. We must also be in touch with the wonders of life. They are within us and all around us, everywhere, any time.

If we are not happy, if we are not peaceful, we cannot share peace and happiness with others, even those we love, those who live under the same roof. If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society will benefit from our peace. Do we need to make a special effort to enjoy the beauty of the blue sky? Do we have to practice to be able to enjoy it? No we can just enjoy it. Each second, each minute of our lives can be like this. Wherever we are, any time, we have the capacity to enjoy the sunshine, the presence of each other, even the sensation of our breathing. We can be in touch with these things right now. It would be a pity  if we are only aware of suffering.

― Thich Nhat Hanh, Suffering is not enough (  Thich Nhat Hanh – Sunshine and Green leaves, The essential writings, Edited by Robert Ellsberg)

“Every day we touch what is wrong, and as a result we are becoming less and less healthy. That is why we have to learn to practice touching what is not wrong – inside us and around us.We see that conditions for peace and happiness are already present.”  writes zen master Thich Nhat Hanh in ” Touching peace.”

Some of us get one dimensional with life. We get overwhelmed by situations. We get too attached with our roles and responsibilities. We must also find time to be happy and peaceful. The best way to do that is by smiling and being loving towards all. My friend always reminded me to smile. It is the first step to happiness and peace. There are so many conditions of happiness in all of us and around us : our health, job, blue sky, the laughter of a child, women, men,  water, fresh air, trees, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova,Garbiñe Muguruza, Roger Federer, Gisele Bündchen, Dalai lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Jim Carrey, school mates, teachers, parents, friends, the one you love…:)

Smile and be happy. Be happy as much as possible. It is always possible.

I am going to see the movie  ” The Jungle book ” with family. I am trying to touch happiness.

Have a easy sunday dear friends! Be happy and be well.

Love, Suresh
