Faith ( Tolstoy)

29 Feb

“Whatever answers faith gives, regardless of which faith, or to whom the answers are given, such answers always give an infinite meaning to the finite existence of man; a meaning that is not destroyed by suffering, deprivation or death. This means that only in faith can we find the meaning and possibility of life. I realized that the essential meaning of faith lies not only in the ‘manifestations of things unseen’, and so on, or in revelation (this is only a description of one of the signs of faith); nor is it simply the relationship between man and God (it is necessary to define faith, then God, and not God through faith); nor is it an agreement with what one has been told, although this is what faith is commonly understood to be. Faith is a knowledge of the meaning of human life, the consequence of which is that man does not kill himself but lives. Faith is the force of life. If a man lives, then he must believe in something. If he did not believe that there was something he must live for he would not live. If he does not see and comprehend the illusion of the finite he will believe in the finite. If he does understand the illusion of the finite, he is bound to believe in the infinite. Without faith it is impossible to live.”

―  Leo Tolstoy, A confession and other religious writings

I was thinking about ” Faith” today and came across the great writer’s quote ” Faith is the force of life. If a man lives, then he must believe in something.” My school friend had  told me  “You are a good person and you must have faith in yourself.” It is the only thing ever had.  Where are you my friend…

A great saint from these parts said ” We are ever free if only we would believe it, only have enough faith…” We must believe this.

Remember Tolstoy ” Without faith it is impossible to live.” I think it makes up for everything else that is not there. Ask me..

Goodnight dear friends! Faith is the force of life and my friend…

C’est moi – 26/2/2016

27 Feb

” I Feel like Rockwell, “Somebody’s watching me”
I got no privacy whether on land or at sea.
And for you biting zealots, your raps are cacophonic
Hypocrite, critic, but deep inside you wish you had the pop hit.
It hurts don’t it, the refugees come to your turf and take over the earth.”

-Lauryn hill ( Fugees) – Zealots

parking

This is the parking lot of the building where work. I take a walk there every day after lunch. My mother when well packs a tiffin. I like taking a solitary walk. I think of things that make me happy. I reframe my mind and go back to work. I finish a year and two months in office. I have some hopes and have some plans. I will keep  posted.

” And even after all my logic and my theory,
I add a muthaf**ker so you ignint niggas hear me.
And you remember take notes,
As I sow my rap otas
And for you biting zealots, here’s a quote. ”

-Lauryn hill ( Fugees) – Zealots

lunch

Iam no good at taking selfies as you can see. This at a open cafetaria for lunch. I always struggle with food. I am alone and prefer it now. Sometimes talk to a friend.

” As long as someone was listening, I knew it was a start,
For me to get a chance, grab my pen and revamp
Do a cameo while everybody do the dance.
Quick now, cause you runnin’ out of lucka
Playin’ Mr. Big, I’m gonna get you sucka.
While you munchin at your luncheon, I’ll be planning your assassination
Then hit you like the Dutchmen ”

-Lauryn hill ( Fugees) – Zealots

Hope you like the rap lyrics:)

It’s just in fun or may be not. May be 🙂

Have a good day dear friends!

A debate ( India)

26 Feb

I have opted out of all debates.

I was not like that. My first job recommendation was given by a Kind  Professor and among other things had written ” He enthusiastically participates in debates…”. I was twenty two. Now twenty two years later have lost interest in all debates. I want to do something with life. I do not wish to make statements. It would be unfair to my experience of life.

I read commentaries and articles. There is a sedition debate going on in my country. I think it’s a stupid law and the government action on students is simply overreach and  strong arm of the law. It is government’s inexperience and as for student’s they will grow up and learn..

The student’s will learn freedom of speech comes with reasonable restrictions and government will learn nationalism is not like Mark Zuckerberg T shirts or Albert Einstein‘s Suits…

But who am I to judge ?

I did feel sad when a Ph.d student committed suicide for simply lack of inclusion and the note published in newspapers was poignant…

I was sad. I am uninterested in the lady minister’s speeches….a life has been lost..

No ideology is worth losing a life really is my submission…the young must know this…

Here are two experienced voices and commentators from India on the sedition debate..

My humble request to students: Things change and you will grow up…

My humble plea to Prime minister : You have so much promise and let’s deliver the promise..

I opt out of debates..

This for today. Hope you have a good day dear friends!

Quote 25 Feb

“I am awfully greedy; I want everything from life. I want to be a woman and to be a man, to have many friends and to have loneliness, to work much and write good books, to travel and enjoy myself, to be selfish and to be unselfish… You see, it is difficult to get all which I want. And then when I do not succeed I get mad with anger.”

―  Simone de Beauvoir

Isn’ this all of us? may be as a metaphor this is full life…can we have it all?

I like this quote from the great french writer. Think about this..

Have a good day dear friends! If you figure ” how to lead a full life do tell me..”

Good Read ( Continued..)

24 Feb

Me and brother have a need to read, we like knowledge, may be we are old school, in  this days of apps for everything, wonder if anything scholastic has meaning, never mind, hope you like these articles…

Meet Nergis Mavalvala, the Parsi celebrity scientist from Pakistan – Atika Rehman ( Scroll.in)

This is a nice little celebratory story of a woman scientist who was part of many researchers involved in discovery of gravitational waves. In a lighter vein South Asia has equal tendency to appropriate and celebratory any one successful with hint of a lineage as some one as their own. Remember a golfer called Vijay Singh, who really had nothing to do with India.

I like this story because soft sciences are important and love the good non chalant message Nergis Mavalvala has for women ““I grew up in a family where the stereotypical gender roles were not really observed,” Mavalvala says. “So I grew up thinking women can, must and should do anything and everything. That is very important for me.”

” Mavalvala said that her parents are not scientists and don’t necessarily fully follow the things she works on. “But they have always been supportive,” she said. “They always felt ‘if this is what she wants to do, let’s get out of the way and let her go with it’ – that’s a powerful situation to grow up in.” She added, “There was no pressure to do something that was their dream rather than mine.”  Writes Atika Rehman

Great Adventurers of Science – Javier Yanes for Ventana al Conocimiento ( BBVA Open Mind)

If you would wish to read about great adventurers of science : Charles Darwin, James Cook, Scott and Amundsen, Ernest Shackleton and Thor Heyerdahl.

Charles Darwin (February 12, 1809 – April 19, 1882) is hardly what we would define as an adventurer. And yet, at a crucial moment in his life in which his practical mind led him to list the pros and cons of the decision to marry his cousin Emma Wedgwood, he not only considered that marriage would steal time away from his readings or his scientific discussions, but he also feared that tying himself to a woman would mean that he would never “see the Continent —or go to America, or go up in a Balloon, or take solitary trip in Wales,” as he himself wrote” . I am no Darwin, any caring and good person interested 🙂

I read this on Linkedin shared by MIT Technology review. It’s a good read and informative.

Elephant, Meet Room : Here’s What LinkedIn CEO said to Employees after stocks dropped 40 Percent – Kara Swisher ( re/code)

Please check the video link for the superb Linkedin CEO  Jeff Weiner talking to  team after the bourses gave a knocking to LinkedIn Stock. Whatever have seen or read about LinkedIn. I like the CEO. To keep the big picture always in focus and to quote Leonard cohen from a interview ” To not operate from a landscape of blame, shame, repentence, guilt..” If you don’t do that, you are special. Jeff Weiner  has a compassionate side. I like Jeff Weiner. The other CEO & founder whom like is some one whom knew Samir Patil, Scroll.in. Their work inspire me.

Good reads (past week..)

23 Feb

My apologies for being away, my problem is ” monotasking”, can do only one task at a time 🙂

Here’s some of the really nice articles read last few days..

Reporting on Life, Death and Corruption in Southeast Asia – Thomas Fuller ( The Newyork times)

This is a great and moving article about travails of life and reporting in Southeast Asia. One of the best journalistic pieces read in recent times and my friend had shared this on social media. I love journalism and think it has great possibilities.Thomas Fuller in this brilliant piece writes about life in south east asia ” I have covered life and death in Southeast Asia for the past decade, a job that has entailed puzzling over a missing Malaysian plane one day (two years later, it’s still missing) and interviewing former C.I.A. mercenaries who were being hunted by the government in the jungles of Laos another. I seemed to spend almost as much time dodging the authorities as interviewing them.” This is a must read.

What BuzzFeed’s Dao Nguyen knows about Data, Intuition, And the future of Media- Noah Robischon ( Fast Company)

I love Digital media for its sheer democratization and  reach. The space excites me. This is my passion. Much as like my job, my love with digital media continues and as always possibilities are immense. I love this interview. Dao Nguyen in this delightful interview says “One of the things I learned at Le Monde I think is still true today is news consumption is different from consuming other products. It’s not like one day someone will just wake up and go, “Today, I want to be informed,” like the way of: “I want to have chocolate chip ice cream”, they wake up, “I want to wake up and have ice cream today,” so they go out and buy ice cream. News isn’t like that. Nobody just wakes up and goes: “I want to be informed. I’ve never been informed before, I was informed in the past, I was informed a bunch a couple of years ago, it was pretty cool, maybe I’ll be informed again. I’m going to go out and purchase something or do something to inform myself.No. It’s a habit. It’s a person’s identity.”

Read this if you like digital media and it’s about content, data science and creativity. I think should also start writing ” 25 steps to make suresh happy or 22 thoughts to think at night..” Never mind. BuzzFeed is 100 million $ and going strong. I loved this interview.

Afghanistan’s Romeo and Juliet, defying religion and culture for love – Mick Krever ( CNN)

At first thought this is a journalist’s imagination. I read it in Christiane Amanpour‘ facebook page. But this is a beautiful real story. It happens all the time and should happen all the time. Not all love is rewarded. But love is the most beautiful thing in this world.  My personal take is just be loving and give..

” Zakia and Ali knew theirs was a forbidden love. She was Sunni and ethnically Tajik; he was Shiite and ethnically Hazara — the Montagues and Capulets.

“From forth the fatal loins of these two foes

“A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life”

So begins, with gloomy prophecy, one of the most famous stories in English literature. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet would take their own lives out of despair.Rod Nordland, a journalist who found Afghanistan’s Romeo and Juliet, says that in that country, the despair all too often comes to an end in a so-called honor killing.” Writes Mick Krever.

So think about this ” someone loves someone, she should have that bravery to do whatever has to be done,” Zakia told Nordland.

Please read this: http://edition.cnn.com/2016/02/03/world/afghanistan-nordland-amanpour/index.html

This for today and thank you as always for stopping by and being patient with my humble struggles, my love for every one who comes this way..

Have a smiling day dear friends!

Meryl Streep & Robert De Niro..

14 Feb

Robert de Niro and Meryl Streep inspire me and often watch this tribute …

I have posted this before and it never fails to inspire me, am no acting student and do not watch many movies, but try to watch a Robert de Niro and Meryl Streep movie, they and their work inspires me endlessly..

As Meryl Streep says ” In the brilliant, in mundane, telling,  choices and details, that accumulate and make life’s work..” They inspire me.

I know today is Valentines day and do not have much of a personal life, so want to share this video which love…

I read a beautiful and brave Afghan love story though…

My goal has always  been to strive to do what Meryl Streep says of Robert de Niro ” Actor’s love Bob’s work because it is unfailingly honest and uncluttered. Details are important.”

Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese inspire me..

Martin Scorsese in a AFI acceptance speech quoted a parish priest saying ” his movies were too much Good Friday, not enough easter sunday..”  The idiom being him is his movies. You can only be yourself.

Today what did I do ? I tried to find a courier company which works on sunday and did not,  gave driving lesson to my brother.  I was so scared. Me and my brother then went and bought a helmet. I then went for a solitary bike ride at night. I decided to bike towards my fathers office. I could not hide my…

May be father is my only expression of true love. Yes the women, love them , remember them all the time..

My little boring life but yes want to do unfailingly honest work…

In this video, there is a backdrop of Martin Scorsese saying ” He throws himself in the deepest and darkest chasms and always comes out a human being. ”

We must all be inspired by De Niro , Meryl Streep and Martin Scorsese.

Good night friends! Happy valentines day!

Love, Suresh
