My mother’s birthday

30 Apr

My mother's birthday

Today is my mother’s birthday! My mother follows the native ” Hindu” calender and so whenever she says it her birthday. That’s her birthday. Of course there is a official ” English ” calender birthday, There too whenever she says its her birthday. That’s her birthday. I give her that leeway. Recently she told me am following the wrong date as my birthday, and that my actual birthday precedes by a day. I do not contest her but do my thing 🙂 We went to temple together in morning. Me, my brother and my mother. I decided to gift her “Sarees.” I went to my usual shopping place but they said they don’t have a saree counter to my surprise. But knew places where could buy sarees. I often escort my mother and sister and drop them when they want to shop. One of my duties is also to go to a ladies tailor shop and collect stitched clothes. I am domesticated and a good guy 🙂 These shops they spread sarees on a bed , where one could make a informed choice. That’s what am trying to do in the picture 🙂

One of my heart’s desires is to make my mother proud. I tried my best. I learnt in life. “It’s not enough”. I have to fulfill her expectations. People are happy only when their expectations are fulfilled right 🙂 I want to see her happy and content. This is one of my goals in life. Of course she keeps scolding me but means well. She is also very hardworking. Hope you have a lovely day dear friends! Thank you!

Quote

“I believe that…

29 Apr

“I believe that the very purpose of life is to be happy. From the very core of our being, we desire contentment. In my own limited experience I have found that the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being. Cultivating a close, warmhearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. It helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter. It is the principal source of success in life. Since we are not solely material creatures, it is a mistake to place all our hopes for happiness on external development alone. The key is to develop inner peace.”

― Dalai Lama XIV

The great master is so very right. We must extend love and compassion to everyone. I have always found the other more interesting. To share another quote of the master ” A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.” This is so true.  Loving home is true success and happiness in my opinion, we can then cope with any extraneous challenges and obstacles as the great teacher says.  May you always feel warm hearted and loving dear friends. Extend compassion to all! Have a lovely day! Thank you!

My last Vice ( Astrology)…

28 Apr

“Never say, “O Lord, I am a miserable sinner.” Who will help you? You are the help of the universe. What in this universe can help you? What can prevail over you? You are the God of the universe; where can you seek for help? Never help came from anywhere but from yourself. In your ignorance, every prayer that you made and that was answered, you thought was answered by some Being, but you answered the prayer yourself unknowingly. The help came from yourself, and you fondly imagined that someone was sending help to you. There is no help for you outside of yourself; you are the creator of the universe. Like the silkworm, you have built a cocoon around yourself. Who will save you? Burst your own cocoon and come out as a beautiful butterfly, as the free soul. Then alone you will see Truth.”

―  Swami Vivekananda  (1863 -1902)

For more and a critique : http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Swami-Vivekananda-and-the-making-of-modern-India/articleshow/17991410.cms

The 19th century Indian saint believed ” You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself.” I find him a life giver like Gandhi, Mandela, Lincoln,  Márquez and all others in the pantheon of greats. May be  super greats : Socrates, Buddha, Christ, Prophet. If ” Self belief” should be a religion. Then may Swami Vivekananda be its greatest patron saint. Iqbal too , many such apostles..

The initial quote is  in context of my perceived last vice. “Astrology.” I have never been active pursuant or believer of astrology. I have had tryst with astrology as most people from my country. I like mystics. I like realized masters. But have a neutral opinion on Astrology. I will narrate my experiences , foolhardy or otherwise with the subject. I want  to overcome my addiction of reading ” Zodiac signs” in newspaper and on news websites first thing in the morning. My resident guru, my sister had warned me ” Don’t read this, it influences our mind.” during one of her visit’s home. She is right! It plays on our minds. It can work as a aphrodisiac and also as a downer. You might  as well call yourself like that Punjabi Indian singer “Yo Yo……  The singer is quite entertaining though 🙂 please see : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbyHNASFi6U

May be the song was a respite to drab text. I guess share my Zodiac sign with Mandy moore, Pharrell Williams, Keira  Knightley and Mariah Carey . I wonder  why my life is not like theirs then ? or may be must be thankful , that miss ” Hitler” just by a day!  Astrology discounts so much  “talent, skill,  hard work, merit, initiative, struggle, grit, education, determination, sacrifices, suffering, focus, strategy, execution …” And more! May be there is something called as ” Time” . Yes, there is something called as ” grace”.

Did the great Michael Jackson wear a ” precious stone” before doing his signature step or did Usain bolt make a offering to a deity before running hell of a ” sub 10 sec races ” , Did Martin Scorsese ever throw a  ferocious “coconut” in all intensity before starting a project, Did Rakesh sharma aboard Soyuz T-11 and from ” space “say  ” Sare jahaan se acha, panditji hamara  ( from the outer space, our astrologer is the best “…..Unlikely right. 🙂

In fact one of the  writers in a popular mainstream daily here  was a  acquaintance of mine from student  days and am  pleasantly surprised that he became a well known astrologer. Why did he go to college?   When was young and love struck, If liked you for some reason or otherwise, would read your ” Zodiac” too . No wonder ” why my life turned out to be such a blessed one.” Never do it friends 🙂

The eastern philosophy and cultural moorings has given too much credence to the priest, holy man and the astrologer. The mystic and the realized master is one of a rarity. The real ones do not crave for public opinion and have some thing to offer to soul. They are wonderful. There are so many dubious ones too. Rogues. Thief’s. Rapists. Charlatans.

I love realized mystics. I love spirituality. Life has happened to me in such a way that ” soul, prayer, teachings , good people” gave me a anchor. I am so grateful. I pray. I have been to a church retreat. I go to temples. My friend would make me listen to ” Azaan“.. I am all for all religions. I love that life. I am a seeker.

But am wary of astrology! As a child was wary of astrology. I believe had scientific temper as a child. There is no ” fear” as a child. I will try to narrate a few incidents neutrally.

When was 22 years old and while traveling in a Bus with my friend. We were traveling from another city. My friend was a good singer and he was humming a ” old Hindi song”. A rather pious looking man in a adjacent seat took a immediate liking to my friend’s songs and me. He called my friend ” Junior Mukesh”  and myself as ” Premnath” . ( Based on a popular yesteryear singer and actor of his generation ). I told my father this and he had laughed. I thought Premnath was a villain and if my father liked him , then it was okay 🙂  The pious looking fellow told us to meet him in the city. He was educated and did not look shady. We being curious visited him in the city. He made a following prediction ” He told me am not hard hearted and will fail in the examination that was studying for. I was stunned and was earnestly studying for a public examination. He told my friend that he will have difficulty finishing his ” medical degree”. He told me that me will find my calling in “management”.” I was young and stunned.  He was a astrologer. His prediction came true later. I don’t know ” If it was coincidence or it played on my mind.” It did worry me for many days. I was sensitive and impressionable. I decided not to talk to a astrologer again.

Few years ago , faced with a terrible transition, my kind friend told me to visit a astrologer. My friend took an appointment and asked me to go. My friend is very good to me , kind and protective. So I went to astrologer. He had a busy practice like a surgeon or a lawyer. I was impressed. He made his predictions. He tole me to wear two precious stones.  They were expensive but thought life has never been a straight line. So let’s try this .  But after a new movie came, my sister started laughing and calling me 4th Idiot, Please see this scene from movie 3 Idiots http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07B2H82KA3A

I realized me had become a coward by wearing stones and my sister and mother started making fun of me, one stone for a new job, one stone for sister’s marriage , like  Sharman Joshi’s character in the movie 🙂 me discarded  precious stones. I asked my friend” what he did with his stones too”. We both discarded it 🙂

My mother still believes more in her astrologer than me, its not bad . These traditional knowledge give a ” map’ to your life. Rich people go to them. Politicians go to them. Movie stars. Everyone really. I think they work like a counsellor . They also border on pop psychology and truisms. Some are well meaning and true to craft.

I will stop reading Zodiac signs. I think its a minor discretion. At least think so. It does” play on mind”. I will try to no more read it daily. I will probably check the weekend predictions to see how the week panned. 🙂

I hoped to be cured of this and become that teetotaler finally 🙂

I think affirmations which serve us are more useful than the astrological predictions. I want to share one below for you from a master.

” First thing in morning imagine yourself tremendously happy. Get out of bed in a very happy mood, radiant, bubbling, expectant as if something perfect of infinite value is going to happen today. Get out of bed in a very positive and hopeful mood with the feeling this day is  not going to be a ordinary day that something exceptional, extraordinary is waiting for you, something is very close by. Try and remember it again and again for the whole day.”

―  Osho

I had written it down in my notebook and think its better than zodiac signs predictions. It puts us in a positive frame of mind. Its a good belief to start day with 🙂

I took this picture today morning. I was fascinated by flowers strewn all over. May happiness be  flowers strewn all your way dear friends!

Have a lovely day dear friends!  Thank you!

I read about former F.C Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova’s sad demise. First time read about illness few years ago, gave me lump in throat. The disease is never a good omen. My father had it. I was sad. He was only forty five. No age to go for a Barcelona coach. No age to go for anyone. Sad. May god bless his family with eternal strength and love.

Please see this tribute to coach from Josep Maria Bartomeu i Floreta,President of FC Barcelona : http://www.fcbarcelona.com/football/first-team/detail/article/open-letter-from-the-president-to-all-barcelonistas

The president of FC Barcelona writes and i quote :

” We have learned many things thanks to Tito. His humility and discretion, uncommon values in the world of football today. His perfectionism and his penchant to demand the most of himself was a source of inspiration for all who have worked with him. I remember that he required the Camp Nou’s pitch to be like a perfect carpet! He did not care if need be persistent if it was necessary, because he fought for what he believed with the same enthusiasm he put into his own work.”

Good bye Tito Vilanova! Eternally Remembered!!

Thank you!

No more Random..

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”
   ― Dolly Patron

Its been those days

Haunted, broken, vulnerable

Your trusted ones long gone

Your father, the beloved, childhood

The veil of tears

sudden and unbecoming

You who never cry

Travesties of time or otherwise

Your soul bursts open

Valley of tears

Long gone and recent

You search, grope, wonder

” How come…”

All you have is a soul

All you have is a smile

All you have is a spirit

Yes, you your own friend

You are still blessed though

children and women still kind

Nobody who ever knows you

Never unkind and never unloving

Your two best  friends,

They who give you warmth

love , embrace, shade

like a benevolent tree

They never give up on you

Never ever like a North star

They your candescent light

You are broken but so very grateful..

It suddenly dawns on you

Flashes through your splintered light

You cannot do much

Family health and god’s will

But you ” You must be never random

Yes no more random, no more…”

That’s my bleeding insight

blood soaked, weary and long sufferring

” Yes be no more random with life

No more random with love

No more random with work…”

You who accept everything

Without rancor nor complaints

Zen, eagle and river

Your living symbols

Yes but “Be no more random, heaven sake..”

You must do what you love

You must be with whom you love

You must work with precision

No hazy eyes or bitter symphonies

You must then ” be no more random”

You who know “yourself “

You must then be intentional

Some recognize you privately

Your enemies publicly

You must be something

You have never been really

You must ” never ever be random..”

You must do what you want

You must want ” What you want”

No more random, never ever random..”

Atleast ” Be No more  random, do what you must, be what you must…”

I had a “vision” of life like everyone. I want to reclaim my vision. My insight is ” be no more random”. I remembered this Dolly Patron quote which is really ” The truth” .

“I pray for my friends, I pray for my beloved, I pray for my family, I will pray for you too!” I believe people are not axioms, theories or judgements , they must be loved, another post 🙂

Have a lovely day dear friends! Thank you!

Nirvana : The Man Who Sold The World

25 Apr

Fourteen , fifteen years ago faced with a situation, used to work for four hours every day with young people. I just wanted to be occupied and did not want anyone to know this or that about me. The work was drudgery and but young people always lift your spirits. One young girl even whispered to me ” Nirlajjam Sada Sukhi.” A rough translation would be ” Shameless are always happy” 🙂

They would play music all the time. I fell in love with Niravana’s adaptation of David Bowie song ” The Man Who Sold The World”. I would since listen to this song whenever felt sad, like today…

The Man Who Sold The World :

We passed upon the stairs
Spoken was and when
Although I wasn’t there
He said I was his friend
Which came as a surprise
I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone
A long long time ago

Oh no, not me
We never lost control
You’re face to face
With the man who sold the world

I laughed and shook his hand
And made my way back home
I searched for farming land
Years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazer stare
We marked a million hills
I must have died alone
A long long time ago

Who knows?
Not me
I never lost control
You’re face, to face
With the man who sold the world

Who knows?
Not me
We never lost control
You’re face, to face
With the man who sold the world

Sometimes you have this painful feeling of “everything you are, have stood for or worked towards has gone to dust”. I am never scared of public opinion but scared of this feeling. Its a heart wrenching feeling. I felt like that many times. I have been feeling like that today. The only difference now is that whenever am sad , am also determined. It was never like this before. I think have made progress, sadness and determination are Siamese twins for me. My very kind friend who lives in another city has a surprising connection, he invariably calls me. I mumble something but am always surprised. I think its grace and am grateful.

I am sad but just determined to reclaim happiness and life. May be should write a poem. The feeling would go away. Leonard Cohen wrote in a song ” Everybody got this broken feeling Like their father or their dog just died “. May be its that. May be its the awesome guitar riff in the song, please see…

Or may be …

” laughed and shook his hand
And made my way back home
I searched for farming land
Years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazer stare
We marked a million hills
I must have died alone
A long long time ago

Who knows?
Not me
I never lost control
You’re face, to face
With the man who sold the world..”

I love this song, Kurt Cobain was a meteor who illuminated the planet briefly, beautifully with musical genius..

I will be okay and you be good, have a lovely day dear friends! Remember then ” shameless are always happy ” 🙂 Thank you!

Hurricane : Bob Dylan and Jacques Levy ( Rubin “Hurricane” Carter)

24 Apr

I saw a news story that Rubin “Hurricane” Carter passed away. I of course came to know of Mr. Carter through Bob Dylan song ” Hurricane”. It’s a protest song. I would listen to this song many times as a metaphor to understand ” injustice ” in life. I have learnt hardest thing in the world is to be good. Doesn’t take much to be bad. More of that later. Please see this brilliant song.

Hurricane : Bob Dylan and Jacques Levy

Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood
Cries out, “My God, they killed them all!”
Here comes the story of the Hurricane
The man the authorities came to blame
For somethin’ that he never done
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world

Three bodies lyin’ there does Patty see
And another man named Bello, movin’ around mysteriously
“I didn’t do it,” he says, and he throws up his hands
“I was only robbin’ the register, I hope you understand
I saw them leavin’,” he says, and he stops
“One of us had better call up the cops”
And so Patty calls the cops
And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashin’
In the hot New Jersey night

Meanwhile, far away in another part of town
Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin’ around
Number one contender for the middleweight crown
Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down
When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road
Just like the time before and the time before that
In Paterson that’s just the way things go
If you’re black you might as well not show up on the street
’Less you wanna draw the heat

Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops
Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowlin’ around
He said, “I saw two men runnin’ out, they looked like middleweights
They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates”
And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head
Cop said, “Wait a minute, boys, this one’s not dead”
So they took him to the infirmary
And though this man could hardly see
They told him that he could identify the guilty men

Four in the mornin’ and they haul Rubin in
Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs
The wounded man looks up through his one dyin’ eye
Says, “Wha’d you bring him in here for? He ain’t the guy!”
Yes, here’s the story of the Hurricane
The man the authorities came to blame
For somethin’ that he never done
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world

Four months later, the ghettos are in flame
Rubin’s in South America, fightin’ for his name
While Arthur Dexter Bradley’s still in the robbery game
And the cops are puttin’ the screws to him, lookin’ for somebody to blame
“Remember that murder that happened in a bar?”
“Remember you said you saw the getaway car?”
“You think you’d like to play ball with the law?”
“Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw runnin’ that night?”
“Don’t forget that you are white”

Arthur Dexter Bradley said, “I’m really not sure”
Cops said, “A poor boy like you could use a break
We got you for the motel job and we’re talkin’ to your friend Bello
Now you don’t wanta have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow
You’ll be doin’ society a favor
That sonofabitch is brave and gettin’ braver
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple murder on him
He ain’t no Gentleman Jim”

Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much
It’s my work, he’d say, and I do it for pay
And when it’s over I’d just as soon go on my way
Up to some paradise
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
And ride a horse along a trail
But then they took him to the jailhouse
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse

All of Rubin’s cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance
The judge made Rubin’s witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger
And though they could not produce the gun
The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed
And the all-white jury agreed

Rubin Carter was falsely tried
The crime was murder “one,” guess who testified?
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride
How can the life of such a man
Be in the palm of some fool’s hand?
To see him obviously framed
Couldn’t help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land
Where justice is a game

Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell
That’s the story of the Hurricane
But it won’t be over till they clear his name
And give him back the time he’s done
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world

Source : http://www.bobdylan.com/us/songs/hurricane

This is a Brilliant song. Bob Dylan deserves a Nobel. I would listen to these below lines again and again ;

” Rubin could take a man out with just one punch, But he never did like to talk about it all that much , It’s my work, he’d say, and I do it for pay, And when it’s over I’d just as soon go on my way, Up to some paradise, Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice, And ride a horse along a trail, But then they took him to the jailhouse, Where they try to turn a man into a mouse…” .

The world is neither fair, just or right. I think the masters : Buddha, Christ, Prophet all addressed that. l discovered in my own little work ” people who can’t hurt you, will hurt you financially and rob you of your dignity. I often wondered, what value is such money, how shallow is then such people….. . ” I wondered if only certain things would not have happened, would my life have been different…

My biggest struggle and learning was to forsake ” Bitterness or anger”. I went through a process of ” acceptance ” and ” love”. I learnt the value of “response”. A return to ” Innocence .”  My friend told me ” Your best answer is ” happiness and success”. I realized its truth. Happiness and success is the best answer to all injustices ( perceived or real) in this world. I believe ” It is good which is good . Good is brave. Good is strength. Bad is lout. Bad is shallow. Bad is easy.’ I guess all of us have bit of Rubin Carter in us..

Hope you like this song as much as liked sharing and Bob Dylan should be taught in school books. Have a lovely day! Thank you!
