Thich Nhat Hanh:Be Beautiful, Be Yourself

I would like to share this beautiful interview with sublime Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh.I love Dalai lama and Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings and both are influential, wonderful, benign living saints. I have found  moments of peace and joy  in simple ( not simplistic) breathing practices enunciated in Thầy’s( Master Thich Nhat Hanh) teachings.  The great director Martin Scorsese once said ” There’s no such thing as simple.Simple is hard”.Or as the great Steve Jobs says “Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”  Simplicity leads to an Insight. Some of the most wonderful contemporary musical genius from these parts, Ilaiyaraaja, and A R Rahman ( Oscar,Grammy,Golden globe and BAFTA award winner) are  innately simple and their creations have a spiritual quality  about them. There is also a great Indian movie star, Rajinikanth, who epitomizes similar traits, his movies are all style, fun and dramatic, but he remains grounded in a monk like simplicity. It is extremely endearing and some how feel sublime and simplicity go together. Leonard cohen once said about his song ” The Future” where he wrote ” I’ve seen the future, brother:it is murder.” He said these are insights one arrives before time after one has peeled off the easy, the convenient and the rational positions. So simple is tough 🙂

To quote Thich Naht hanh from this interview “There are two things: to be and to do. Don’t think too much about to do—to be is first. To be peace. To be joy. To be happiness. And then to do joy, to do happiness—on the basis of being.” Or “Many people cannot be with themselves. They have pain, sorrow, or worries inside, and they read or watch or listen to cover this up, to run away from themselves.” This is really true and may be this is what makes television click.

I was deeply pained to read about recent suicide of a very young  movie star Jiah Khan here, if only what Thich Nhat Hanh says “Usually people lose themselves in a strong emotion and become overwhelmed. That is not the way to handle emotion, because when that happens you are a victim of emotion. In order not to become a victim, breathe and retain your calm, and you will experience the insight that an emotion is only an emotion, nothing more. This insight is very important, because then you are no longer afraid.” If this is taught in school, ingrained in every family, so many precious lives could be saved…

I hope you like this interview of a most sublime and beautiful Zen master and of whom the interviewer rightly says is “Always fresh, always wise.” I leave you with a quote of Cohen in a interview ” Am not so much interested in theology but am interested in relaxation” 🙂 Hope you like this interview. Have a nice day dear friends. Thank you!
