Angela Lee Duckworth : The key to success – Grit

15 Jun

This is a nice talk on ” Grit” as the true barometer of Success. I like to share talks which concur with my beliefs , no wonders most of the talks are by women , because they happen to be more perceptive in my opinion 🙂

I always wondered if anyone could succeed naturally ie if you were talented and did what you had to do ,would it lead to success , my own learning has been that’s not really the case. Temperament ,confidence , belief all had a part but guess the truest trait is grit , ability to persevere against all odds..

Angela Lee Duck worth says something really nice “Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

She further says in her talk “We need to take our best ideas, our strongest intuitions, and we need to test them. We need to measure whether we’ve been successful, and we have to be willing to fail, to be wrong, to start over again with lessons learned.
In other words, we need to be gritty about getting our kids grittier.”

I often wondered while watching tennis matches on television say between Maria Sharapova vs Serena williams , they are beautiful , champions , have made a name , yet they fight every point to exhaustion..

Same with my favorite tennis player Rafael Nadal , who in a recent interview said he enjoys the suffering endured in tough matches. True Grit!

I read about a Indian woman , Arunima sinha , who lost her leg after being thrown out of a moving train , then resolved and succesfully climbed mount Everest on a prosthetic leg . Truest Grit. Please see this ,

To leave with a tennis anlogy, a quote which caught my fascination in my growing years by Jim Courier , champion tennis player on being belitted on his talent “There are many different talents besides hitting a tennis ball.”he said. “There is a lot of talent about having guts on the court, having desire is a talent and having courage to go for a shot when you are down love-40 is a talent, too.”

True Grit is highest talent , its everything 🙂 Hope you like it. Thank you!
