Beautiful Interview – Leonard Cohen ( NRK – Part 3)

30 Apr

This is the final interview in this wonderful series . Leonard graciously talks about being defrauded by his manager and says something wonderfully instructive , says his relationships deepened, friendships deepened and his whole affective personal world deepened. This is very true about misfortune , some of our truer relationships get deepened and we cannot say where we get our education from..

Leonard’s observation on politics find a mention here , most notably his song ” The Future” and particularly love his verse on America..

Oh one more thing
You aren’t going to like
What comes after America..

I think its true , myself dread a world full of Chinese noodles , much like spieldberg’s movie ” Gremlins” which my school had shown in an auditorium , where a very disagreeable organism keeps multiplying on contact with water 🙂

There is a mention of cohen’s lines for spetember 11…

Some people say
It’s what we deserve
For sins against god
For crimes in the world
I wouldn’t know
I’m just holding the fort

Since that day
They wounded New York

Some people say
They hate us of old
Our women unveiled
Our slaves and our gold
I wouldn’t know
I’m just holding the fort

But answer me this
I won’t take you to court
Did you go crazy
Or did you report
On that day
On that day
They wounded New York…

There are few lines from the poem A street…

It’s going to be September now
For many years to come
Every heart adjusting
To that strict September drum

I see the Ghost of Culture
With numbers on his wrist
Salute some new conclusion
Which all of us have missed

So let’s drink to when it’s over
And let’s drink to when we meet
I’ll be standing on this corner
Where there used to be a street..

Hope you loved this little triology , one of my bosses used to say business is better than sex , disagree , listening to cohen is better 🙂 Thank you!

Beautiful Interview – Leonard Cohen ( NRK – Part 2)

30 Apr

This is the second interview in series and Leonard talks about a sense of invigorating purpose from Zen and his teacher ( this is from Part 1) and about how privileged he has been to meet some nice people and says it has something to got to do with Love. People who habitually forgive you and don’t operate from the mechanism of blame , shame , guilt and repentance. This must be a true facet of love , we all have one or two true friends who habitually forgive us 🙂 I love Cohen because he is honest about struggles of existence and peels of a perspective or an insight.

The video also has extracts of his signature song – Hallelujah , with lot of versions from nice artists. I had liked Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright version earlier , but all are nice. The lovely interviewer Helle Vaagland wonders if the song is a prayer , he quotes the last verse…

I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah..

and says its kind of deep acceptance and Dylan singing it was a wonderful affirmation for him…

It also has some lines from one of my favorite leonard’s songs – The Guest. Hope you like it..:)

Beautiful Interview – Leonard Cohen ( NRK – Part 1)

30 Apr

Leonard Cohen is a master and wonderfully humane , me don’t have a father and anybody to talk and listen to , so lap up pretty much everything Leonard Cohen says , sings or writes with a keen interest. I think he is the Christ of the dysfunctional world.

This is a part 1 of wonderful interviews for Norwegian Television by a lovely interviewer Helle Vaagland. I intend to post all three interviews. In this interview she asks about Cohen’s book – Book of longing and Cohen in his inimitable style describes longing as ” something undifferentiated longing , general energy to keep interest in things, which can locate themselves in a part of mind and illumine things ” very interesting and suspect it is true , so longing per se is not disagreeable 🙂 It also has some lines from his beautiful song – If it be your will..

If it be your will
That I speak no more
And my voice be still
As it was before
I will speak no more
I shall abide until
I am spoken for
If it be your will

.. I love the way Leonard describes his book as a handsome book , which could give a moment or two of interest , entertainment and even pleasure 🙂 Hope you like it..

Cat Stevens – The Wind

29 Apr

My younger brother and a dear departed friend introduced me to this beautiful artiste in Bangalore. I love Cat Stevens songs , this is one of them 🙂

I listen to the wind
To the wind of my soul
Where I’ll end up well I think,
Only God really knows

I’ve sat upon the setting sun
But never, never never never
I never wanted water once
No, never, never, never

I listen to my words but
They fall far below
I let my music take me where
My heart wants to go

I swam upon the devil’s lake
But never, never never never
I’ll never make the same mistake
No, never, never, never..

“Always try to …

“Always try to keep a patch of sky above your life . ”

– Marcel Proust

27 Apr

I came across this article today and struck a chord with me about working till one’s last breath. The article quotes the noted film critic Roger Ebert saying ” “When I am writing, my problems are invisible, and I am the same person I always was,” while waging a battle with cancer , this is poignant and also true. I have always felt work gives a structure , something to forget our struggles and locate a sense of self and being. Leonard cohen in an interview said ” its not death one is vary of but the preliminaries ” , the great artiste is wonderfully doing concerts at age seventy eight. I remember reading about Randy Pausch’s last lecture while waging  a battle with a terminal illness. I have always loved work and found it gave  a meaning beyond the surging restlessness and sometime’s immensity of  life’s challenges , if its a labour of love, nothing like it , if it means being a shoe shine boy, so be it , its zen,  as the great Kahlil Gibran says ” Work is love made visible”…

Good people to being good..

26 Apr

As a young person one of my goals was to meet good people , to be with good people and work with good people. The greatest joy of life presumed was to meet warm and exciting people. As reflect now can share with assurance that this wish came true.I met  wonderful people , men and women, some of whom never imagined would ever  meet.

As a student my friends were warm ,generous and extremely gracious with me , they allowed me to stay with them in their hostels and houses and were kind to to me. My early friends went to become public servants , doctors and journalists.

As started working and generally, met some nice people , intelligent , gifted with a sense of purpose. I deeply enjoyed my assignments. I never worked for money initially, it was always for the joy of working with good people and challenging engagements. I met some wonderful people who went to become successful entrepreneurs , international executives and writers. I was grateful and considered myself incredibly lucky to meet and work with people that i did. I also met unsavory people , but that’s an another post..:)

It dawned on me , as much as it is fun and exciting to meet good people , the natural course is to become good yourself. The good people that met had their own destiny and challenges on their path and a man must find himself or herself. You need to find yourself to find another. Therein in began a journey to be with self and try and cultivate ” my own tiny little garden” as one of my heroes Leonard cohen put it in an interview.

I loved the beautiful people met , some are shining stars and all wonderful with their own garden , some big as parks , some with world on their feet ,feel a fraternal , communal ,loving sense with them , my own little broken journey “to be good” began , realized we all need a little bit of grace to befit on us to find our own self and enterprise , hopefully will make progress , till then intent is as Henry David Thoreau put it ” to go confidently  in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined “..

The life of my dreams is to be good myself. Thank you friends. Love.
